Notebook Manufacturers purchase their LCD Displays from a half dozen worldwide producers of LCD displays, the leaders being Samsung, LG Philips, AUO, and Sharp. The LCD Manufacturers are in constant competition to produce the least expensive LCD having used inexpensive backlight assemblies that are inefficient in the amount of light they produce. 3M has developed a line of films that can be retrofitted into any LCD that will make the LCD much more efficient in directing and redirecting bouncing light toward the front of the LCD. These films can increase the brightness (measured in lumens by a light meter) of an LCD by 40% to 145%. The range depends on the number of films used and also the inherent properties of the glass and light filters within the original glass.
